The certification in Public Health and Humanitarian Action aims to provide the students with the basic concepts in public health, focusing on the role of public health in humanitarian crisis.

To earn a certificate in PHHA, students need to complete courses totaling 12 credit hours within 2 years.

*PHHA students can take the seminar on Human Right to Health (3 credits) under the Center for Holistic International Human Rights Law Praxis as elective.

Course I.
PHHA 505: Health Vulnerabilities in Conflicts
(Public Health & Peacebuilding)

Course Description

The course will provide an overview of the conflict-affected communities and public health issues related to conflicts and political instability. It will also cover a brief introduction to public health, research methods and academic writing.

Course Objectives

The objective of this course is to introduce students to the public health vulnerabilities related to conflicts and political crisis. Conflict-affected health vulnerabilities will be educated comprehensively, reflecting diverse communities affected by conflicts.

Learning Outcomes

(1) Identify conflict-related health issue(s) in their community,
(2) Ascertain the political determinants of conflict-related health vulnerability(ies),
(3) Demonstrate the national and international actors for conflict-related health issues

Course II.
Introduction to Public Health and Humanitarian Emergencies

Course Description

This course covers the basic knowledge and understanding of Public Health and Humanitarian Emergencies. It focuses on sub-disciplines soundly relevant to both areas of expertise with interest in providing best public health practices in humanitarian response to the course participants.

Course III.
Research Methodology in Public Health

Course Description

The course introduces to the key concepts of research methodology in public health such as research problem, research design, research proposal, data collection, data analysis, and research report. Students will understand how these methodologies can be applied to the design of research studies and how they can be critically appraised when they are working on these studies.

Course Objectives

The objective of this course is to introduce students to the concepts and skills necessary for designing a research proposal, conducting the original research, and critically reviewing published research.

Learning Outcomes

(1) Identifying and prioritizing the research problems,
(2) Performing literature reviews using print and online databases and employ proper formats for citations,
(3) Formulatiing research objectives and hypotheses,
(4)Determining analysis strategies for the research question,
(5)Summarizing and critique the methodological processes used in published research articles.
